Patch Test Before Brow and Lash Treatments — When Is It Mandatory and How to Document It [2026]
Henna, lamination, lash lift, lash extensions — the inspector asks about the patch test for every treatment. Form, waiting time and the salon's liability explained.
A patch test (allergy test) before henna brows, brow lamination, lash lift, or eyelash extensions is not a luxury — it's a legal and sanitary obligation. In 2026 every Sanepid audit asks for documented tests. Missing = fine plus real civil liability if a client reacts.
When is a patch test mandatory?
Required for any beauty service that:
- Brings product into contact with mucous membranes (eyes, lips) or peri-ocular skin
- Contains potential allergens: PPD (henna), cyanoacrylates (lash glue), thioglycolic acid (lamination), phosphate formulas (lifting)
- Lasts longer than 30 min with product on skin (lifting, lamination, chemical depilation)
Specifically: henna brows, brow lamination, brow lifting, lash lift, lash extensions, chemical brow depilation, botox brow/lash regeneration.
How to perform a patch test step by step
A patch test takes 24-48 hours. There's no "quick patch test" same day. A new client must visit 1-2 days before the actual treatment.
Standard procedure (henna - PPD)
- Disinfect skin behind the ear or inner elbow with 70% alcohol
- Apply product at treatment concentration — 1 drop, 5 mm spot, do NOT rub
- Leave product for treatment duration (typically 5-15 min for henna)
- Rinse with water and dry. Photograph optional but good practice
- Instructions: don't wash, don't apply creams, observe 24-48h
- Second visit (+24h or +48h): assess reaction
Positive result = allergy
Type IV contact reactions appear 8-72h after exposure. Symptoms: redness, itching, blistering, swelling. Any of these = positive test = treatment cancelled. You note in the client card and provide a written note about the contraindication. Do NOT treat even if the client requests and signs "I waive any claims" — such waivers are legally void for professional misconduct.
Patch test form template
Form must include: client name + phone, test date and treatment date (24h difference minimum), tested product brand + batch + expiry, application site, exposure time, "Test result" field, client signature + date, technician signature, "Contraindications declared by client" field.
Patch test card is part of the Client Card. Full template included in START pack (297 PLN ~70 EUR).
What if a client reacts despite negative patch test?
Patch test detection rate is ~85% — 15% of reactions are delayed (up to 7-10 days) or to ingredient combinations. What you do:
- Calm conversation — explain situation, recommend a dermatologist visit
- Document — note in client card with date, symptoms, photos if available
- Don't admit fault nor refuse compensation — pass the case to your professional liability insurance
- Show documentation — properly performed patch test + signed client allergy declaration = legal defense in 99% of cases
Professional liability insurance for beauty salons costs ~800-2 000 PLN/year. Always worth it.
Red flags - clients requiring extra caution
Clients who declared on their card:
- Asthma, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, allergic dermatitis
- Steroid or immunosuppressant use
- First trimester of pregnancy + first 6 months of breastfeeding
- Past allergic reaction to henna
- Rosacea, perioral dermatitis
...require extended patch testing (48h instead of 24h) plus additional history-taking. Note in card that client is aware of elevated risk.
Patch test and Sanepid audit
The inspector asks about patch tests when seeing henna or cyanoacrylate adhesives in your salon, or after a client complaint. Checks:
- "Patch test performed" field in client card with date and result
- Test date is before treatment date (24h minimum)
- Patch test procedure in the binder, described step-by-step
- Material Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for products — must list allergens
Missing documented patch test for a henna or adhesive treatment is an automatic violation + 200-1 500 PLN fine. A client's civil claim after reaction can be much larger — thousands to tens of thousands PLN.
FAQ
Does the patch test work once or before each visit?
Once at the first visit for that treatment. Subsequent visits don't require repeat — unless you change product or client reports new allergies.
Can I do a quick 30-min patch test before treatment?
NO. Type IV contact reactions develop 8-72h. Patch test must have minimum 24h exposure-observation. "Express patch test" is fiction.
Can the client waive the patch test by signing a release?
NO. Patch test is your salon's sanitary procedure, not the client's choice. Waivers are void if a reaction occurs — your insurance will refuse to pay.
Do I need physical evidence of patch test, or signed card sufficient?
Signed patch test card in the documentation is sufficient. Photos are good practice, not legal requirement.
What about patch test for lash lift?
Yes, mandatory. Lash lift uses thioglycolic acid (allergen), lash adhesive contains cyanoacrylates (strong allergens). Test on skin behind the ear — apply drop of glue, drop of lift solution, observe 24-48h.
